Textile waste, such as roll ends, clothes, shoes, linen and other fabric items, can come from two main sources – households and the manufacturing sector.

Fast fashion and more shops selling cheap clothing have meant that many people have turned their backs on buying second-hand and have developed a ‘throwaway’ attitude to textiles. This means a growing volume of waste materials, with Defra estimating that 1.5 million tonnes of unwanted clothing ends up in landfill sites every year.

In the commercial world, textile waste comes as a direct result of production - often the higher the production, the greater the amount of waste.
